The United States Naval Academy (USNA, or "Academy" for short) is the undergraduate college of our nation's naval services. . Located in Annapolis, MD, it prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character and compassion in the United States and the Marine Corps.

Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the United States. They attend the Academy for four years, graduate with a Bachelor of Science and commissions as ensigns or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Graduates of the Naval Academy serve at least five years in the Marine Corps.

A civilian employee at the U.S. Naval Academy has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, the Navy announced late Friday.

The employee is currently in isolation at his home while Maryland public health officials conduct a contact investigation to determine if others at the service academy were exposed.

Reported that the employee had not been at the Naval Academy since March 6, the start of USNA's spring break.

News of the contagion comes as the academy introduced distance learning policies, preventing midshipmen from returning to the dock.

"USNA is committed to taking all possible measures to protect the health of our forces," the Navy said in a statement.

"We remain in close coordination with state and federal public health authorities to ensure the well-being of our staff and the local population."

In a March 18 memo to mediators, Vice Admiral Sean Buck ordered the brigade's 4,000 members to follow a Defense Department order to halt movement and begin online classes.

"There is simply too much uncertainty and risk associated with this virus at this time to bring the brigade back," Buck wrote.

On the West Coast, two other sailors assigned to separate ships in San Diego, Calif., tested positive for COVID-19, the service announced Friday.

The sailors are now isolated from the ship and "personnel immediately identified as having been in close contact with these sailors have been notified, placed on restricted movement status at their residences outside the ship and are being observed," the Navy said.

The service did not say which ships the sailors were assigned to. The Navy previously enlisted sailors aboard the USS Pacific Fleet

(LCS-4) tested positive for COVID-19. The USNI understands that all ships are currently in port and there has been no report of a case of COVID-19 on a deployed ship.

Ships in Europe and the Pacific observe a 14-day period at sea between ports as a precaution to limit the spread of the virus.

Ashore, the Navy also announced that a staff member assigned to Naval Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn., has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The employee exhibited symptoms on March 18, was tested for COVID-19 at Baptist East Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and was immediately quarantined," the Navy said Friday.

Naval Academy To Hold In Person Commissioning Ceremony For Class Of 2021 After Covid Changed 2020 Plans

The U.S. Naval Academy's middle class recites the "Leadership Pledge" on Class Induction Day 2011.

Induction Day or I-Day is the official name for the first day of Plebe Summer at the United States Naval Academy. Usually held in late June or early July, it's the day members of the Naval Academy's newest class arrive in Annapolis; for most it is also their first day in the army.

Induction Day activities take place in various locations across campus, with each location change corresponding to a new phase.

Prospective midshipmen begin the day by checking in at Alumni Hall, the academy's Center for Naval Activities, where they are welcomed to the Navy by the command chaplain's staff. Immediately after, the new brokers receive their first orders, which are dealt with quickly and strictly. It's always "From now on the first and last word out of your mouth will be 'Sir' or 'Ma'am.' Do you understand? Throw away any civilian clothes or items they brought with them and get a haircut in a makeshift barbershop.

All new male ensigns have shaved heads. They are intended for medical examinations, where blood and urine samples are taken for drugs, alcohol screening is carried out and vaccinations are carried out. They are also checked for tattoos and piercings; a midshipman may be dismissed from the Academy unless approved by the superior officer.

The media are outfitted in their new uniforms and issued much of their necessary equipment, such as professional publications and field equipment, which is trucked to the midships departments.

The new environment completes the administrative paperwork, including arranging bank accounts and payments, approving credit for issued purchases, launching a Group Life Insurance Service and various other administrative items.
