The motto of the War of 1812 "Never Abandon the Ship" is still the rallying cry of the US Navy.

The museum displays the "Never Abandon the Ship" flag that Captain Oliver Hazard Perry flew while defeating the British at the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813.

During the war, the US Navy patrolled and fought in the Great Lakes, the Chesapeake Bay, and the high seas.

Annapolis, Md For Kids

The conflict—especially the battles in the Chesapeake region and the invasion of Britain—convinced Americans that they needed a strong military, including a navy large enough to protect the nation's waterways and coastline.

The War of 1812 led to a defensive policy that shaped the American military structure for years to come. For the remainder of the 1800s, coastal defense and the construction of large warships dominated American defense spending. Wander the grounds or stay for a fun, history-filled day.
