Sales of lightweight twin pistons have been so slow that most aircraft buyers—and aviation writers—have written the segment off as all but dead. And no wonder. There aren't that many pilots walking around airports these days telling you they want twins. This is largely a byproduct of the rise of high-performance piston singles like the Cirrus SR22 and Cessna TTX, which can do everything a twin can do, but with significantly lower operating costs and essentially no safety penalty.

However, it is not yet time to predict the return of the twin-piston segment. DA62 is an anomaly, an exaggeration. After all, most pilots today who are advancing in the profession and do not dream of an aviation career are not forced to "transfer" to the Twins. I recently had the opportunity to spend a few days flying the DA62 and visiting Diamond Aircraft's factory at Wiener Neustadt East Airport, south of Vienna. From experience I came away convinced that for the right buyer this is almost an ideal aircraft. For example, if you want seven seats instead of the five or six offered by competing aircraft, the DA62 makes perfect sense. If you don't have access to a ready supply of 100LL avgas, the DA62 is a great alternative to the petrol powered models. If you are more comfortable flying over inhospitable terrain or water, sometimes at night, and want the power and redundancy of systems you get with another engine, the DA62 should definitely be on your shopping list.

There are other reasons to love the DA62. One of the features that impressed me was how dirty this plane flew. Take for example the process of starting the engine. It involves the simple steps of pressing the main switch, turning on the main engine, waiting a moment to make sure the glow plug notification is over, and then pushing the engine start button. that's all. The Austro Diesel immediately comes to life as the two-channel full-authority digital engine control (fadec) controls revs and constantly checks for faults, while your second job is to display oil pressure. As long as the gauges are in green, you're good to go.

The start-up process before take-off is equally effortless. This includes setting the parking brake, manually selecting the A and B channels of the Engine Electronic Control Units (EECU) and making sure they are both connected, and pressing and holding the engine start buttons. This is where the magic begins, as the Fadec AE330 computers automatically increase power to 1,950 rpm and perform several health checks, including prop cycling. The throttles never physically move and there are no drive levers to move in the first place. If no error message appears on the primary flight display of the Garmin G1000 when the test sequence is complete, you are ready for takeoff.
